The players who missed latest Grand occasion?

at various points, has played alongside Marty Holah, Justin Tipuric and Sam Warburton.

But Griffiths is another who appears to have offended Lady Luck in a previous life. Injuries rarely seem far away and his latest bump saw him pick up a ruptured bicep.

He has undergone surgery and will be out for the rest of the season, stacking the World Cup cards against him. After all, he couldn’t force his way into contention when he was bang in form back in the autumn, so the odds on his being propelled into the set-up after a major injury appear remote.

But, still, keep an eye on him next season. He is a player worth watching.

ELLIS JENKINS

The Cardiff Blues flanker suffered a shocking knee injury in the final seconds of Wales’ win over South Africa last autumn. He received the man-of-the-match award for his efforts in that game, but it would have been scant consolation.

Jenkins ruptured anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments as well as sustaining tendon damage.

He had surgery to repair the damage to his right leg before starting a lengthy recuperation.

There’s been no clear indication when he might return, though Cardiff Blues coach John Mulvihill reported earlier in the year that he was “getting stuck into his rehab”.

It might be asking a lot to expect Jenkins to figure at the World Cup, given that the expectation is he would have to attend Wales’ summer training camps.

But it will be good to see him back on the field whenever he regains full fitness.

He is a player with a huge amount to offer Cardiff Blues and Wales.

RHODRI JONES

Wales invested a lot of time in the development of Jones, albeit on the tight-head side of the scrum when many felt his stronger position was at loose-head.

But his versatility is something that might interest any coach heading into a tournament.

He hasn’t played since dislocating a shoulder playing for the Ospreys against Cardiff Blues on January 5.

But he is set to return when the Ospreys play two Guinness PRO14 games in South Africa early next month.

AARON JARVIS

He returned to Wales from Clermont Auvergne amid suggestions he could be the man to double up and provide prop cover on both sides of the scrum for Wales at the World Cup.

But it’s been a frustrating season for the amiable 32-year-old.

A bicep injury ruled him out of the early weeks of the campaign and a ruptured hamstring sustained in January saw the curtain fall prematurely on his season.

So, the man who covered hooker as well as prop for Wales in the 2015 global tournament is set to have a watching brief for the event in Japan this autumn.

DAN LYDIATE

An arm injury forced Lydiate out of contention for Wales’ Test against South Africa in the autumn and he hasn’t played since.

He had been in form before the knock, starring for the Ospreys in their win over Connacht in Bridgend and showing up strongly for Wales against Scotland.

He also performed well against Australia.

Wales appreciate his defensive excellence and know what an asset he can be when restored to good health.

He is due back in the coming weeks and will travel with the Ospreys to South Africa for their two games against the Cheetahs and Southern Kings in early April.

SCOTT WILLIAMS

The Osprey has been another who’s endured a trying campaign that has seen him spend more time in treatment rooms than on training pitches.

A hamstring injury cost him close on three months on the sidelines in the autumn and a back problem meant he sat out the Six Nations.

That very same back injury has now seen him ruled him out for the rest of the season.

Centre is an area where Wales lack the depth they enjoy in other positions and so the assumption is Warren Gatland would want the tough-nut Williams back in the mix.
