WELSH LEAGUE

PENYBONT remain nine points clear at the top of Nathaniel Cars Welsh League division one following a 2-0 home win over Briton Ferry Llansawel.

Ferry are one of just three sides to have taken points off Penybont this term.

When they met in the reverse fixture at Old Road back in late December, the league leaders needed a deflected injury-time equaliser from Luke Borrelli in order to save them from a first defeat of the campaign.

However, there was no such drama yesterday as goals from Kieran Howard and Adam Carpenter settled the contest for Rhys Griffiths’ side.

The table-toppers also have two games in hand on second-placed Cambrian & Clydach, who themselves had to come from behind at Cwmbran Celtic before running out eventual 3-1 winners.

Sam Jones bagged a brace with Liam Reed also on target for the Nathaniel MG Cup runners-up after Chris Ham had put the hosts in front.

It sets things up nicely for next Saturday’s clash in the Rhondda between the top two. Cambrian are undefeated in the league since their 5-3 defeat at Penybont back in September.

Haverfordwest County are now 16 points back on Penybont with nine games remaining after they went down 2-0 at Ammanford.

Mathew Fisher and Euros Griffiths grabbed the goals for Ammanford.
