I hope his tenure will soon be over

-

SO, July 24 saw the election of a new leader for the “English National” party and a new Prime Minister for the United Kingdom and “Minister for the Union”.

Where does this leave us in Wales? Already Johnson and his right wing Brexiteers are talking of an injection of £2bn specifically for cities in the Midlands and the North and a Trans Pennine Railway.

Has there been any reference to what we can expect to the west of the “Prince of Wales” Bridge?

Virtually the only remain voting cabinet minister is our esteemed Secretary of State for Wales, Mr Alun Cairns.

Why has he been retained, when there has been a clear out of all other cabinet remainers?

The answer is surely obvious when we examine Mr Cairns’ failure to stand up for Welsh interests during the May premiership.

His inertia over Wylfa, the electrification of the railways west of Cardiff, the Swansea lagoon fiasco and the dumping of waste off the south Welsh coast has obviously persuaded Johnson, that Mr Cairns can be relied on to be his Welsh poodle, to toe the English nationalist line and to follow his consistent policy of subservience within the cabinet. He can also sit more comfortably at Westminster following an injection of more English MPs into the Welsh Office.

His refusal to appear before National Assembly committees shows his disdain for that body, and for the forgotten people of Wales. We can only hope that his ineffective tenure as Secretary of State will soon be over.
