READY, LAYER ONE?
BY THE time you read this, Love Island 2019 will be over.
I know I said I wasn’t going to watch it anymore. I lied, the lure was too much.
In preparation for the 9-10pm gap in my life I have lined up the second series of Big Little Lies, the brilliant Californiaset drama starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon.
Whether I get through it all by the end of August depends on the weather. If we are blessed with a glorious month then all TV will be shelved until autumn.
As I write this the mercury is bubbling in the high 70s (Fahrenheit not Celsius), but as we know, all that can change in a flash.
Last week I wore a rain hat and boots to an outdoor concert thanks to a morning of torrential rain, only to be greeted on arrival at the event with blue skies and the sun blazing through the clouds.
When it comes to the British weather, unpredictable is an understatement, no wonder we are all getting caught short in the clothes department, especially for work.
Anyone else forget to take into account the office air conditioning when Google tells you it’s highs of 25°C that day, only to then sit in work, teeth chattering like you have been struck by Elsa from Frozen, looking round to see who has a spare cardigan on the back of their chair?
I feel your pain. Layers have never been more necessary.
Layer one is sleeveless, perhaps a vest suitable for sitting al fresco at lunch time (remember sun cream please people, the British sun is exactly the same burning hot one that is over the beach in Mallorca).
Layer two is required for leaving the house at 7.30am and for offices where the inside temperature on sunny days could keep ice-cream chilled.
Beware those lightweight man-made fabrics. They may look cool but when it comes to the crunch, polyester is a one-way road to sweat creases.
Yes, linen crumples like paper but it’s breathable, look at the Man From Del Monte wearing his linen suit in the Caribbean. That was no happy accident.
