Sheer contempt for democratic process
IT seems that some of those who are passionately interested in remaining in the EU despite a majority of the electorate voting to leave it have a new bogeyman who it seems is more adept at parliamentary tricks than they are.
Radio 4 devoted quite a lot of time to Mr Dominic Cummings this morning.
Passionate Remainers/Lib Dems are perfectly entitled to their opinions and to extol the virtues as they see it of the UK remaining in the EU. But there is no need to become nasty about it.
I seem to remember the Tory/Lib Dem coalition sending an expensive booklet to every household prior to the 2016 referendum, promising to implement the decision of the voters.
No talk of “advisory” or “no deal”. My argument is not complicated.
Political parties publish manifestos in the hope of being elected. Voters vote for the parties of their choice in the expectation that promises made will be promises kept.
Something seems to have gone radically wrong.
Lastly, I have no intention of engaging in a writing dual with any of your correspondents.
But just for the record, I have visited the war cemeteries in France and Belgium.
One of my uncles died of wounds in 1918. One of my cousins was killed in 1942. Many of my relatives served in both wars. I served 20 months’ active service in Africa in 1954/55 and 23 years in one of the Royal Naval Reserves in the Cold War.
I will say no more on that subject. People are entitled to their opinions. I have an interest in politics and I can never remember a time when public representatives had such contempt for the democratic process and the wishes of those who elected them. Harry Thomas Neath
