Corbyn pledges eco jobs for Wales in his green drive

LABOUR claims its green industrial revolution will transform society and create high-quality, green jobs in Wales.

Jeremy Corbyn has set out the plans for major energy infrastructure projects, which include potentially reviving the Swansea Tidal Lagoon, which was shelved after the Conservative government refused to support the lagoon scheme developed by Tidal Lagoon Power.

Other plans for the initiative include bringing the National Grid into public ownership and the mass

installation of solar panels on nearly two million homes – with lowincome and social renting households prioritised.

On a visit to the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth today, the Labour leader will hear about the practical solutions they recommend that government takes to reduce carbon emissions.

Earlier this year, the Welsh Labour Government declared a climate emergency. Labour would replicate this if it forms the next UK government and has placed tackling the climate emergency with a green industrial revolution at the heart of the party’s plans.

Since 2011, more than £240m has been invested to improve the energy efficiency of more than 45,000 homes across Wales of people on low incomes or living in the most disadvantaged areas. A further £104m will be invested by 2021 to improve up to 25,000 more homes.

Ahead of his visit to the Centre for Alternative Technology Mr Corbyn MP said: “The next Labour government will turn the Tories’ failed approach on its head with a green industrial revolution to tackle the climate emergency, create hundreds of thousands of good green jobs in every region and nation of our country and save millions of households money on their bills.

“From the mass installation of solar panels, insulating homes, building of the Swansea Tidal Lagoon, expanding solar and wind energy and bringing the National Grid into public ownership, Labour’s Green Industrial Revolution will benefit working-class people by cutting energy bills, creating good jobs in new, green industries and fighting the climate emergency.

“This task is urgent. Labour in Wales is showing the action that can be taken in government. Together with a Labour government across the UK, we will go further and faster to transform our society, tackle inequality and avoid environmental destruction.”
