Incomers are sadly diluting Welshness
I THINK there should be some redress to the comments made by D Coughlin in his letter, (Western Mail, August 21), particularly that linking “Aryan Nazi supremacy” with movements to protect and aid the survival of the Welsh language.
The latter has often been an uphill struggle against the power of the British state to obtain some small concession, such as the right for Post Brenhinol to be displayed on the side of mail vans.
The cultural dominance over incomers was, I thought, the raison d’être behind Brexitism.
Indeed, his concluding comments in the first paragraph would neatly fit the description of Brexiteers and the present incumbent of 10 Downing Street. Not being fully conversant with the complete works of Orwell, I am somewhat puzzled by the dichotomy between patriotism/ militarism and nationalism/power.
Surely one cannot be achieved without the other as testified by the achievement of the British Empire.
The Welsh nation also made its sacrifice for “King and country” in both world wars. I’ve always known which king but was never too sure which country they died for; cf. Hedd Wyn.
Unfortunately D Coughlin’s final sentence is a complete reversal of the truth with incomers totally dominating our Welshness; cf. Powys last census c. 52% of the population were born in England and their effect on the Ukip vote.
Since moving to Gwynedd some decades ago I have seen the effect of incomers on a small community such as the village of Penygroes, with the increasing anglicisation of the
language spoken on the street.
If I moved to a European country I would expect to be and welcome being engulfed by its native language and culture. Dorian Williams Garndolbenmaen
