Corbyn’s failure to oppose effectively

-

ANNA McMorrin, Labour MP for Cardiff North, is absolutely right to say that a cross-party approach is needed to stop Brexit but she must recognise the uncomfortable truth that the prospect of Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister would be an insurmountable obstacle to its success.

HM’s Leader of the Opposition has consistently failed to hold the Prime Minister to account at Prime Minister’s Question Time because he can only read from a prepared text as he cannot think on his feet at the despatch box.

He has failed to convince voters that it’s Government policy, not immigration, that is the root cause of their housing problems, their poverty, their lack of good schools and colleges, their lack of health and social care. He has failed to support voting reforms to prevent a few thousand floating voters determining the outcome of general elections, which meant that many voters voted for the first time in the referendum.

We have waited long enough for any effective opposition to the shameful housing of families in shipping containers due to the sale of council houses which councils cannot afford to replace. We have waited long enough in queues to see a doctor. We have waited long enough to see class sizes in our schools go down instead of up. We have waited long enough for Corbyn to make clear that this is not down to immigration but down to austerity cuts to local government in Labour constituencies.

Labour MPs must face up to their catastrophic mistake in electing a leader who cannot lead and give their support to Ken Clarke to lead a cross-party government with Keir Starmer as his Brexit Secretary.

Parliament will only have 30 days to avert catastrophe. Our MPs will never be forgiven if they fail our country and we find ourselves up for sale to Donald Trump. Margaret Phelps Penarth
