Parliamentary threat to British democracy

-

IT SEEMS some of my comments on the present political situation in this country have ruffled a few feathers.

It never was my intention to upset anyone but nor do I wish to be upset by the apparent disregard for the outcome of the 2016 referendum, surely one of the greatest exercises in democracy of all time.

I have been around long enough not to take every word in political party manifestos as gospel but I and other voters are entitled to expect that those who canvas our votes will

use every endeavour to carry out promises made.

Otherwise, what is the point of it all and who is to be trusted?

I can’t think anyone who believes in democracy and our political system would have derived any comfort from the scenes both inside and outside the House of Commons earlier this year.

I have continually stated that people are entitled to their opinions but it was thought that our system had evolved to the point where the majority vote carried.

If efforts to block Brexit can be carried by one vote in the Commons, why can the 2.4 million majority who voted Leave be ignored?

I value co-operating and trading with other European states, long may it continue. But I have not been aware that anyone was asked if they approved of the Maastricht and Lisbon treaties which gave so much power to EU politicians and bureaucrats who have the power to override decisions taken at Westminster. Britain has faced many threats in the past and we have come through.

A “deal” involves two or more parties. A sure way of getting “no deal” is to take it off the table.

We are not supplicants and it is time that the EU realised it. Harry Thomas Neath
