125-year-old poster set to go on sale at Carmarthen market
SMALL agricultural events are a showcase for the best in farming, rural affairs and country living, and a poster offered for sale in the next Carmarthen Antiques & Flea Market, on Sunday, September 1, celebrates this long tradition.
The 125-year-old poster promoting the first show to be held in Llandefeilog, Carmarthenshire, is a rare surviving example of an advertisement from the period.
The poster for the event, held on August 9, 1895, talks of classes for cattle, horses, sheep, pigs and live poultry. The show had a large number of horticultural competitions which would have attracted fierce competition.
The Llandefeilog & District Agricultural & Horticultural society poster in the sale is expected to be of interest not only to local history enthusiasts, but also to those looking for something unusual to frame and hang on their walls.
As one of the biggest events of its kind in south Wales, the Carmarthen Antiques & Flea Market is the place to go if you’re looking to add character and style to your home with decorative pieces that can’t be found on the high street.
With up to 200 exhibitors and stands both inside and outside at the town’s showground, it’s a great place to find quality antiques, vintage and retro pieces of furniture that are perfect for upcycling.
Ceramics collectors won’t be disappointed either. A Swansea Pottery plate from the Angel Inn on Carmarthen’s Lammas Street is another great piece of local history on sale.
As well as taking place on Sunday, September 1, the Carmarthen Antiques & Flea Market will be back on Sunday, October 20 and Sunday, November 24.
Each event runs from 10am. Admission is £4.50 for adults, with accompanied children admitted free of charge. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. Carmarthen’s showground is on the A40, minutes from the town centre, SA33 5DR.
