A23-year-old has died after allegedly being attacked during a holiday in Tenerife. Michael Lewis, who also went by the name Liam Boland, died in the island’s capital Santa Cruz after suffering serious head injuries in an incident on August 20.

Mr Lewis, an apprentice joiner, was taken to the University Hospital Nuestra Senora de La Candelaria, where he died two days later. Most recently working as an apprentice, the former Rhyl High School pupil had only flown out to the resort with friends four days before tragedy struck.

It is understood a man, also said to be a tourist, is being questioned by Spanish police.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “Our staff are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Tenerife, and we are liaising with the Spanish police.”

The news of Mr Lewis’ death was shared on social media by his aunt, Karen Hughes.

She wrote: “Today is a very sad day. “It is with the greatest regret that we have to inform everyone that Michael Lewis (Liam Boland) has sadly been taken cruelly from his family and friends.

“Liam/Michael was a very special person to many people, he was too young and innocent to leave us this way.”

Since then, dozens of loving tributes have been posted on Mr Lewis’ Facebook page.

One friend, who had been on holiday with him, said: “Being with you on this holiday has been a privilege, being your friend means more, we will truly miss you mate and we will get justice

for you. Sleep tight Brillo mate.”

One said: “You were always polite and respectful. I’m so gutted to be writing this.”

Another added: “You were such a lovely caring person and we’ve had many laughs. Sleep tight beautiful.”

One friend wrote: “A lovely man with a cracking smile. You always put a smile on my face, even when you were winding me up. Stolen from us at 23. We live in such a terrible cruel world. Rest easy fella, I’ll never forget ya.”

Michael, who studied at Coleg Llandrillo before going on to work as an apprentice for Brown & Carroll in London, had been staying at the Playa Real hotel in Adeje.

■ A gofundme page has been set up to raise £5,000 for the cost of funeral arrangements.
