Attack on devolution a sign of tired politics

-

STEPHEN Kinnock’s article (WM, August 15) is indicative of why his Labour Party is performing so badly in Wales at the present time.

For his article shows why so many voters in Wales have lost faith in his party. Mr Kinnock was parachuted in to represent a safe Labour Welsh constituency a few years ago, giving him a chance to get to know the country of his parents.

Yet since winning his seat, he has shown no interest in Wales whatsoever – apart from the time when his constituents at the Port Talbot steelworks were threatened with redundancy.

As far as I know, he has had nothing ever to say about Welsh culture or offered any vision for Wales. For example, he had very little to say about the Swansea barrage – even though it is very close to his constituency?

It is also interesting to note that he still opposes a second referendum on EU membership, despite the fiasco during the last three years and the implications that a no-deal Brexit will have on Wales. This clearly means that he is happy to contemplate a form of British nationalism in separating itself from Europe. Yet, he falls over himself vilifying Plaid and the SNP for wanting more devolution without presenting any cohesive case against them.

He should try to understand the forces at work pulling voters away from the failed two-party, “first past the post” Westminster government, rather than attack the benefits of devolution. Could it be that he is fearful that Labour is about to lose a sackful of seats in their fiefdom and that his seat may be one of them?
