Murder probe on after body found
A MURDER investigation has been launched after a man’s body was found at Barry Docks.
The discovery was made at Barry Intermodal Terminal in Wimborne Road yesterday morning.
Officers were called to the scene at 5.50am and the area remained cordoned off yesterday as forensic officers carried out investigations.
The man has not yet been officially identified.
A number of police vehicles were at the scene, with the entrance to the site blocked.
It is an active container terminal and is a key facility for the region’s chemical industry, handling liquid bulks.
Barry handles Scandinavian and Baltic timber, steel cargoes, coal, cement, and aggregates, as well as specialist liquid bulks to serve the UK’s chemical industry.
The site handles about 300,000 tonnes of cargo, contributing more than £340m to the economy every year.
A nearby shop worker said: “There was a load of tape across the gates for where they keep the containers. There were about half a dozen cars going past at around 10.30am.”
Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Mark O’Shea, from South Wales Police’s major crime investigations team, said: “A murder investigation has been instigated and a major incident room has been set up.
“The investigation is very much in its early stages, however, I am appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.
“There will be an increased police presence in the area.”
