MOTHER DIES AFTER TENT HIT BY CAR
AMOTHER has died after being run over by a drink-driver who ploughed through her tent as she slept at a quiet country campsite.
Mum-of-two Anna Roselyn Evans, 53, was asleep during a family camping trip at the Rhyd y Galen campsite, near Bethel, Gwynedd, when driver Jake Waterhouse, 26, careered off the road to smashed into her tent at 2am on August 19.
Artist Anna spent eight days critically ill in hospital – but lost her fight for life from her injuries.
Last week Waterhouse appeared before Llandudno Magistrates and pleaded guilty to causing serious injury to Mrs Evans by dangerous driving, failing to provide a breath specimen and driving without a licence or insurance.
No indication of plea was made for a fifth charge of dangerous driving.
He is now expected to be charged over her death.
Anna was one of four people injured when uninsured driver Waterhouse careered off the road
into the campsite.
Three other people, who were injured during the incident, have been released from hospital.
Anna’s son, Richard, yesterday paid tribute to his mother in an emotional post after she died in hospital.
He said: “Tonight I had to say goodbye to the most amazing woman I’ve ever known. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. She was my mother, my best friend, my rock and I’m going to miss her so so much.
“She inspired me to do music, art and to always ‘do the next interesting thing’. I know I’ll do you proud.
“I love you, Mam. I hope you’re dreaming of a starry night. Here’s to the next interesting thing.”
Ceredigion Assembly Member Elin Jones said: “This is such tragic and shocking news. My thoughts are with Anna’s family and friends.”
Anna lived in Aberystwyth, with her husband Huw, 57, a groundsman at the town’s university.
Friends and family also paid tribute to the “joyous and talented woman” on social media.
Elvira Preseli wrote: “We are so, so sorry that this has happened and will always treasure the times we shared and will forever be proud that you all chose us as your friends.
Another friend wrote: “I am so, so sorry. Anna was unique and brightened up everyone’s life.
“The world will be a sadder place without her. My thoughts are with you all.”
At Llandudno Magistrates Court last there was evidence Waterhouse had been “drinking heavily” before getting behind the wheel and had left Mrs Evans with “life-threatening injuries.”
Carys Parry, defending, said that Waterhouse, who wept in the dock during the hearing, “takes full responsibility for the devastating events at the campsite.”
She added: “He is truly and deeply remorseful for his actions.
“In his own words, he said: “I deserve to be punished.’”
The court heard that the 26-yearold of Hazel Walk, Partington, Manchester was driving his friend’s Subaru Impreza around the field before the collision.
Magistrates imposed an interim driving ban on Waterhouse, who was further remanded in custody until his next appearance at Caernarfon Crown Court on September 23.
A second man has been released under investigation, pending further enquiries.
Detective Inspector Andy Gibson said: “Our thoughts are with Mrs Evans’ family and friends at this very sad and distressing time for them.
“The investigation into this tragic incident continues and we are liaising closely with the Crown Prosecution Service.”
