Hughes makes case for defence

-

BRYAN Hughes intimated that Wrexham will not change tact for the visit of Stockport County today and revert to an ultra defensive stance.

Wrexham’s success of last season was built on their solid defence - the Dragons keeping a club record equaling 26 clean sheets - while their tally of just 39 goals conceded was bettered only by that of champions Leyton Orient.

However, it has been a vastly different story this term, the 4-2 loss on Bank Holiday Monday at Hartlepool United seeing Wrexham ship an 11th goal in the opening seven games, while they have managed just a solitary clean sheet so far.

The Dragons entertain Stockport County on Saturday and will be looking for their first win in four games after successive draws with Notts County and Barnet, preceding the dismal defeat at Victoria Park, while the Hatters’ visit also starts a run of four consecutive home games, which includes hosting Ayr in the SPFL Challenge Cup.

“We’ve got a good run of home games now, Stockport first up tomorrow,” said Hughes. “We want to put the disappointment of what happened at Hartlepool behind us.

“As a group we’ve addressed a few areas through the week in training and we are going to be prepared for tomorrow.

“Our plan won’t change, we want to take the game to them and want to try and win the game and we will see what the outcome is come 5pm.

“We’ve conceded 11 goals now, we need to tighten a few things up and make sure people know their roles in the team. it is that organisational side of it, where people know their roles and their responsibilities and just tightening up a little bit”.
