McIntosh goal is for Wrexham to hit form

-

LEIGHTON McIntosh was delighted to get off the mark for Wrexham, but insisted it meant nothing as the Dragons slipped to a fourth match in succession without a win ahead of tonight’s home clash with Maidenhead United (7.45pm).

Wrexham dropped to 16th place in the early National League standings following Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Stockport County at the Racecourse, Bryan Hughes’ men 12 points shy of pacesetters Woking, but worryingly only two above the bottom four.

McIntosh opened his Dragons account in Saturday’s loss, latching on to Luke Summerfield’s weighted pass to round County goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe and fire home from a tight angle after coming on as a 64th-minute replacement.

The Dundee-born forward, who has made just one appearance from the start in the Dragons’ opening eight matches, insists his goal means little to him other than a confidence boost.

“It was a great ball from Summers,” said McIntosh. “The gaffer had said to try and get in behind and make runs into the channels.

“I’ve seen the keeper coming out, I’ve managed to get a good touch on it, I thought he was going to slide, but once I got that first touch, I saw the angle and went for it and luckily it went in off the post.

“It is good to get a goal, but it is a bit bitter sweet because of the result. But from a confidence stand point, it is always good to get goals as a striker, hopefully I can keep adding them goals and we get on the right end of the results next time.”

McIntosh signed from Scottish League One outfit Airdrieonians in the summer. The 26-year-old scored 17 times in 40 appearances last season for the Diamonds, and at the time of his arrival at the Racecourse admitted he was relishing the new challenge within the English pyramid structure.

McIntosh added: “It has been a little bit frustrating, being in and out of the side and coming on and only having that small window to prove yourself.

“I am just glad that I got the goal on Saturday. I have got to keep on trying to show what I can do. To be honest it (the National League) has been what I expected. It is competitive, it is physical, which is all what I am ready for.

“It is a good squad of players, we should be higher than where we are, so it is always going to be competitive within the squad, and I am sure the results will start to fall our way.”

The Magpies have enjoyed a blistering start to the season and sit in fourth place in the standings having been beaten just twice so far, and head for north Wales on the back of a 3-0 win at Sutton United.
