Rare Peter Rabbit 50p coins escape into the wild

-

THE rarest 50p coin in Britain has just entered circulation with only 400 of them doing the rounds – meaning if you find one in your change it could be worth a fortune.

The Royal Mint in Llantrisant has released a special edition 2019 Peter Rabbit coin, which is not supposed to be in general circulation.

But now 400 of them have been put “into the wild” – being spent in shops or parking metres – meaning they could turn up in your pocket.

The people behind the Great British Coin Hunt PR stunt say they are putting 400 originally non-released Peter Rabbit 2019 50ps into general circulation all over the United Kingdom .

The coins can bought from the Royal Mint for £10.

The Royal Mint says: “The Peter Rabbit 2019 coin is a commemorative-only coin. These will not be entering general circulation.”

The Mint is also selling Silver Proof and Gold Proof versions for £65 and £795.

Kellie, one of the Great British Coin Hunt team, said: “We are circulating the 2019 Peter Rabbit. We’re hoping we’re going to get 40 volunteers to help us do this around the country.

“I’m in Devon this weekend visiting the family, so I’m circulating the coins around this area.”

The video then shows Kellie pay for parking with one of the coins at an unspecified location.

It all started last week when the Great British Coin Hunt team vowed to shake things up by putting 400 of the previously packaged coins into circulation, thereby making it the rarest 50p due to the small number.

The 400 coins are currently being distributed at various locations all over the UK, a process due to be completed by the end of the month. The general public is being urged to keep an eye on their change and share their story if willing.

Ian Lambert, the brains behind the Great British Coin Hunt, has revealed the first 20 locations where the coins have been put into circulation. In another video, Ian explains he was inspired to release the coins after a friend was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer.

Updates on the circulation of the Peter Rabbit coins can be found on the Great British Coin Hunt’s YouTube channel.
