Jamille sets sights on another Matt finish

-

JAMILLE Matt wants to keep his goalscoring run going and play his part in trying to get Newport County back to Wembley this season, writes Rob Cole.

Last weekend’s goal in the 2-0 win over League Two leaders Swindon Town took his tally for the season to five, but more importantly made it back-to-back goals ahead of tonight’s Leasing. com Trophy quarter-final against Leicester City U21.

Matt sat on the bench for the 3-0 win earlier this month over MK Dons that earned the Exiles a place in the last eight and he knows that he needs to keep what he has been doing of late to stay in the side.

“We would like to get some silverware and get another trip to Wembley. We’ve got a lot of lads back fit and we are looking strong,” said Matt.

“There is competition for places and we are all having to fight that bit harder to keep the shirt. I’ve got two in two now and I’m raring to go.

“I never want to rest, I want to pay every minute of every game. I’ll be disappointed if I don’t play against Leicester – it’s all about recovering well from the weekend and getting ready to go again.”

Matt also had an assist to go with his goal against Swindon, but admitted it was hard going on the sand covered Rodney Parade pitch.

It should be better for tonight’s 7.00pm kick-off.

“It was really important for us to back up the previous week’s win and get another victory over a very good Swindon team. We were excellent from start to finish and played the conditions better than them,” said Matt.

“We haven’t become a bad team overnight and teams will still come here and fear us a bit.”

The Leicester youngsters were beaten by Arsenal in the Premier League International Cup last week, only their second defeat in 16 matches across all competitions.
