POLICE have confirmed no new charges will be brought following the death of a man five months after he was attacked at traffic-lights.

Richard Evans died in hospital on Tuesday – after being punched to the ground while trying to defuse a road rage incident last August.

The 56-year-old struck his head on the pavement and suffered major brain injuries in what a judge described as an outbreak of “thuggish violence”.

In October, Liam Keenan, then aged 25, was sentenced to 20 months in prison after pleading guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on Mr Evans with a “cowardly” punch from behind which saw him fall and smash his head on the pavement.

His passenger, Ryan Edgington, then 24, was jailed for six months after he admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm for his part in the incident at the trafficlights in Llanelli.

Mr Evans, from Sketty, Swansea, died on Tuesday, and in tributes from family and friends he was described as “a lovely, kind, funny, pleasant and easy-going human being”.

Following the death of Mr Evans, a spokesman for DyfedPowys Police said officers had reviewed the case and no further action will be taken.

A spokeswoman said: “DyfedPowys Police has reviewed this case in consultation with medical experts, and can confirm that no additional action will be taken.”

Mr Evans was the passenger in a Land Rover when he got caught up in a disturbance at trafficlights in Pemberton on August 10 last year. He was uninvolved in the incident, but when he got out of the vehicle in a bid to “calm down the escalating situation” he was punched by Keenan. Following his death, his brother John described him as a “gentle giant” who would be sorely missed.
