New deal terms will depend on Swans promotion

SWANSEA City return to action today (3pm) with a tough-looking away trip to Stoke City.

The Potters were in disarray the last time the sides met, although they still claimed their first win of the campaign under Nathan Jones at the Liberty Stadium.

Things have improved of late at the bet365 Stadium under current boss Michael O’Neill, and Steve Cooper is only too aware of the task that lies ahead of his side.

Stoke still have a certain Joe Allen in their ranks, with the Wales star being repeatedly linked with a move away from Staffordshire.

Stoke look set to be without Tyrese Campbell after the striker limped off the pitch with a hamstring injury shortly > after scoring what proved to be the winner against West Brom on Monday night.

As for the visitors, they are able to call upon the services of Joe Rodon who is able for selection after fully recovering from an ankle injury.

The Wales international has not featured for the Swans since the 3-0 defeat to Brentford at the Liberty Stadium in October but could return to action at the bet365 Stadium.

Jordon Garrick is back in training after a significant spell on the sidelines with a hamstring problem, although the clash with the Potters comes too soon for the winger.

Swansea will once again be without Mike van der Hoorn who remains absent due to a knee issue. > Mike van der Hoorn will be offered a new deal by the Swans, but the terms will not be as lucrative if the side don’t get promoted back to the Premier League.

SWANSEA City will offer Mike van der Hoorn a new contract, although it will be on reduced terms if the club do not gain promotion this season.

The Dutchman’s current deal expires in the summer, meaning he could leave the Liberty Stadium for nothing following the conclusion of the 2019/20 campaign.

The Swans are still finding ways to cut costs as a result of being relegated from the Premier League in 2018.

A raft of players have left the club in recent transfer windows, including Wilfried Bony, Oli McBurnie, Jordan Ayew and Daniel James.

Further player exits are likely to be required in the coming transfer windows as the Swans continue to balance the books, with parachute payments set to drop yet again for the 2020/21 season.

Centre-back van der Hoorn is among the better paid players in Swansea’s first team squad, although he has been an integral figure for the club since they dropped out of the top flight.

And chairman Trevor Birch has revealed Swansea will offer the 27-year-old a fresh deal, although if Steve Cooper’s men don’t claim promotion this season, the terms will not be as lucrative as those in his current contract.

“We would offer him one on terms that we would be able to afford,” said Birch at the club’s latest fans’ forum.

“He’s on Premier League money.” The defender – currently sidelined due to a knee injury – is one of seven players who will be out of contract in the summer while the

Swans also have six players currently in on loan. Courtney BakerRichardson and Jefferson Montero will also see their deals run out while Utrecht have the option to sign Kristoffer Peterson on a permanent basis in the summer.

The club does have the option to make Aldo Kalulu’s loan from Basel permanent while they look set to retain the services of Chelsea’s Marc Guehi beyond the summer.

And Birch has revealed the futures of those whose deals expire in the summer are currently being discussed.

“We’re obviously looking at the moment as to who we might want to retain for the following season, but those discussions are at early stages,” he added.

“It’s going to be a big turnaround in the summer. It’s a big job in terms of recruitment, depending on which league we’re in.”
