Tributes to dog-loving pensioner as man held in murder probe

-

THE alleged Glynneath murder victim has been named as 73-year-old David Williams.

Mr Williams’ body was found in the Danygraig Lane area of Pontwalby, Glynneath, on Monday, January 27.

A 28-year-old man questioned by police in connection with the discovery has since been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Mr Williams’ family, who are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers, issued a statement saying they were devastated by their loss.

It read: “David was a very loving and generous person who would go out of his way to help anyone he could.

“He was very well known in the dog showing community and he will be missed very much.”

Mr Williams, who was known locally as “Dai Doberman”, was also highly regarded by neighbours and locals.

Friends said he had been a member of The Doberman Welfare Association for 30 years.

Sue James, regional officer for the group, said: “Dave was such a lovely man. I can’t believe he’s gone. It’s such a shock.

“He had been an important member of The Doberman Welfare Association and dogs were his life.

“He had two Dobermans – Eva, who is little older than a puppy, and George. They were always by his side. He adored those dogs and he was the kind of person who would go out of his way to help someone. He was only just at a dog show on Sunday – and now he’s gone. It still hasn’t sunk in.”

Ms James said Mr Williams was a devoted husband and family man who was “born and bred” in the area.

She added: “He was very forthright but straight as a die and had a heart of gold.”

Following the discovery of Mr Williams’ body, two areas of Glynneath were cordoned off yesterday with police tape and squad cars. One was in Ynys y Nos and the other at the end of a lane fronting onto Merthyr Road.

Anyone who was in the Pontwalby area between 2pm and 8pm on Monday and who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously is asked to call 101.
