Man arrested after street stand-off

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill following an armed police incident in a Llanelli street.

Officers and a negotiator were called to Princess Street shortly after noon on Thursday.

Video footage captured the dramatic moment when shots were fired as the armed police shut down the street.

The terrace street was closed for about five hours while officers attempted to bring the situation to a safe conclusion. It was suspected that the occupier of a property was in possession of a weapon. In dramatic footage captured by residents, a large police presence can be seen in the street.

At one point loud bangs, smoke and flashes of light are seen and heard from a property in the street.

A spokeswoma­n for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “A five-hour police containmen­t in Llanelli ended with a man being arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill. Dyfed-Powys Police officers attempted to attend at an address in Princess Street, Llanelli, at approx. 12.15pm yesterday afternoon (Thursday, January 30). Due to concerns for the safety of officers attending the scene, firearms officers and a specialist negotiator were requested to attend.

“Cordons were put in place to ensure the safety of all in the area as a precaution, as it was believed the occupier was in possession of a weapon.

“After five hours, entry was gained by police.”

She said a man was later arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and was in police custody.
