-

ARMED police were called to an area near Cardiff city centre after a 38-year-old man was stabbed.

Police said that the victim was from the Riverside area. He was in a stable condition in hospital yesterday.

There was a heavy police presence in the Ninian Park Road area of Riverside for most of yesterday.

Several streets were cordoned off, including Ninian Park Road, Telford Street, Smeaton Street, part of Craddock Street and Littleton Street.

One Smeaton Street resident said that they saw their neighbour bleeding and had heard that he had been stabbed.

They told our reporter at the scene: “He was alive but he was bleeding. He was very weak as well. He was shouting ‘help me’ but no-one came out’.”

A witness reported seeing four police cars with lights on “flying through the lights” at Leckwith towards Ninian Park Road at the time of the incident.

Police said they were called shortly before 7.40am yesterday to reports of a serious assault.

They said a man had been taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff with stab wounds.

A spokeswoman said: “Specialist armed officers were also deployed as a precaution to ensure the safety of the public.”

She added that police cordons were in place to allow for forensic examination to take place.

There were no reports of any arrests being made before 5pm yesterday.

Police said investigations were continuing and thanked local residents for their patience.
