Green can light up our play-offs bid, says Flynn

-

MICHAEL Flynn believes new signing Jordan Green can give Newport County fresh impetus as they chase a spot in the League Two play-offs.

Winger Green is on loan from Barnsley and played an instrumental role in the Exiles’ 1-0 win over Macclesfield Town on Tuesday. And Flynn is confident the 24-year-old will continue to flourish under his guidance.

“Jordan Green was excellent in the first-half against Macclesfield,” said Flynn.

“He tired on the hour mark and I tried to suck every bit of energy out of him. He gave us a real attacking threat and he’s been exactly what I was looking for.

“He’s a more mature player than the one we had in 2016. That was his first loan and since then he’s played in the Championship this season albeit once and played in League One.

“He’s headed in the right direction in terms of his career. I worked hard to get him because I knew what he could do and it’s paying off at the moment.”

The Exiles travel to face fourth placed Plymouth Argyle today hoping to build on their midweek win. Flynn’s side are eight points off the League Two play-off places but have three games in hand over most of their rivals.

Flynn is hopeful last season’s beaten play-off finalists can go one step further this season, but admits it will dependent on keeping key players fit. And he has also targeted adding more players to his squad before the end of the January transfer window with Wales international Joe Ledley training with the squad.

He said: “It’s Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday now due to the games that were postponed but if we keep everyone fit then we should be fine.

“I’m hopeful it will be an exciting end to the season. If it just flittered out it would be a boring end to the season so of course we want to do well.

“Hopefully, we can get one or two more players in and I hope we can keep players fit.

“Mark O’Brien is out for a while but Ryan Inniss should be back next week which will be a big boost for us.

“If anything is going to happen with Joe I’d rather do it sooner rather than later.

“The appealing thing with Joe is that he’s not a loan. I don’t want it to drag on.”
