He prepares for Stormers debut

-

“He messes about in training just like all us rugby lads.”

Roberts was first approached about the possibility of joining the Stormers in November and the move was confirmed early in the new year.

“I’m hugely grateful to Bath for letting me go halfway through the Premiership season back home and here I am,” he said.

“Of all the cities in the world where I’d like to experience rugby, Cape Town is probably at the top of my list.

“I’m delighted I’ve been able to do it.

“I loved my time at Bath. It’s a great club, but an opportunity like this will probably never come around again, so I had to take it. It became a no-brainer.

“It’s been an incredible first week. The welcome has been immense.

“I’m enjoying the sunshine and I’m here for five months, so I’m going to make the most of every day. It’s just an amazing cultural experience.”

He continued: “At my first press conference, a journalist said to me it would be far more lucrative playing back home.

“But I guess it’s what you define as lucrative.

“Yes, people talk about the financial benefit of playing up north in the Premiership or France or whatever.

“Players might not earn as much down here, but to me lucrative is life experience and rugby experience.

“Rugby as a sport gives you an opportunity to travel and I have always been one who wants to maximise that.

“I will probably never get a chance to come in Cape Town ever again in any walk of life.

“You have only got one life and I am delighted I have taken this opportunity.”
