Williams and Navidi in line to face England

-

WALES say George North will not be rushed back to action, but insist Liam Williams and Josh Navidi have a chance of facing England at Twickenham.

North was replaced in the 11th minute of Wales’ 27-23 defeat to France with concussion following a collision with Gael Fickou.

It was the sixth concussion of North’s career, though his first in four years.

Wales attack coach Stephen Jones said the 94-times capped winger was progressing well through his mandatory graduated return-to-play protocols as Wayne Pivac assesses his options ahead of next week’s showdown with England.

“We’ve got elite medical staff looking after George, making sure he ticks every box. He’s doing very well,” said Jones.

“Listen, player welfare is the most important thing, isn’t it? The key is how George is managed, it’s of huge importance.

“Our medical staff will take him through the correct protocols. Nothing will be rushed or forced. Every box will get ticked properly and that’s the most important thing.

“He’s going down the correct path and he’s in good spirits.”

Jones also gave an injury update on full-back Williams and back-rower Navidi, who could give Wales a boost by coming into contention to face England.

Returning Scarlets superstar Williams has not played since sustaining an ankle injury ahead of the World Cup semi-final against South Africa last October.

Navidi picked up a hamstring problem before a ball was kicked in the Six Nations, but neither player has been released back to their respective region to get game time this weekend. Wales feel that their best chance of being fit for the trip to London is to remain in camp to continue their rehabilitation.

“The situation with Liam and Josh is that they’re in our environment,” said Jones.

“They’re working hard, getting in the reps and load that’s needed to make them available for selection.

“Hopefully they can tick every box along the way and they can put their hand up for selection?”

On Williams, who has had no rugby since the World Cup quarter-final against France, Jones said: “The key is how his training week goes this week and next. Things like how we manage his load and get him up to speed.

There is less positive news on Elliot Dee (calf ) and Cory Hill (hamstring), the impression given by Jones being that they are behind in their race to be fit for next weekend.
