Should we really be footing the bill for Sussexes’ security?

-

BRITISH taxpayers are left facing footing the entire cost of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s security after Canada refused to cover any further protection.

Since moving to Vancouver Island in November, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has helped ensure the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s safety, seconding a number of officers to their £11.4m oceanfront home.

But now it has been announced the Commonwealth country will no longer contribute to their security bills once they step down fully from royal duties on March 31.

The move came after it was revealed the couple’s security could soar to £20m a year leaving UK police unable to cope as the couple potentially tour the world on money-spinning private trips.

The snub leaves Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, relying on the British taxpayer for the cost of their security which they say they need “due to Harry being born into the royal family and Meghan’s own independent profile”.

With Harry now in the UK and Meghan due to fly over soon for their final engagements, the couple is reported to be leaving son Archie in Canada. The move will see yet more taxpayers’ money spent on their security as their nine-month-old will need protection while they are away.

It is wrong we should continue to pay for their security while they are free to earn millions from money-spinning deals without any service to public life as royals.

Throw the baby out with the bathwater by all means but don’t expect us to be left comforting it as it cries.
