England run riot with a 10-try win at The Stoop

ENGLAND WOMEN .......... 66 WALES WOMEN .................. 7

WALES Women were blown away by England as they conceded 10 tries in a predictable rout at Twickenham Stoop.

It was a fourth consecutive defeat for the Welsh side who have endured a torrid Six Nations campaign so far.

A 50-0 home loss to France last time out was followed by this demolition – another result which shows just how far the professional English and semipro French sides are ahead of the rest in the European women’s game.

England second row Poppy Cleall bagged a hat-trick of tries, barging her way over the line at will in the face of some worryingly weak Welsh tackling.

That was a familiar theme throughout the 80 minutes as the Welsh players failed to cope with the power they were faced with.

Wales grabbed a consolation in the second half after being awarded a penalty try when Kerin Lake was tackled off the ball as she looked certain to score, but there can be no denying this was a difficult day.

Following the match, former England captain Catherine Spencer said: “It’s a tough one for Wales. They’ve got a lot of work to do, they’re going to have to really look at their structures and what they’re doing.”

Wales skipper Siwan Lillicrap said: “We did pressure them at times. We’re at the beginning of a building stage, we’ve got lots of youngsters in the squad and we’ve got to stick with it, keep developing, keep learning. We want to play the best sides in the world and we’ll learn more from that than anything else.”

It remains to be seen if Wales will get to finish their campaign against Scotland next week after a Scottish player was confirmed to have contracted coronavirus.

Seven more people, across management and players, are now self-isolating on medical advice. The Scots’ game against France this weekend was postponed.
