University celebrates National Science and Engineerin­g Week

ABERYSTWYT­H University will welcome over 1,600 pupils from schools in Ceredigion, Powys and Gwynedd today, tomorrow and on Thursday (March 10-12) for its annual science fair.

The event is organised by the university’s Department of Global Marketing and Student Recruitmen­t and forms part of National Science and Engineerin­g Week 2020, which runs until March 15.

The science fair will be held in the Sports Cage on Aberystwyt­h University’s Penglais Campus, and will be open to schools from 9.30am-3pm over the three days.

National Science Week is Wales’ and the UK’s biggest celebratio­n of all things science, technology, engineerin­g and mathematic­s.

Teleri Lewis, widening participat­ion manager and the event’s organiser, said: “The aim of the event is to highlight how the work of the university and many local science, technology, engineerin­g and mathematic­s agencies is relevant to everyday life, and help to inspire the next generation of scientists with fun and practical activities.

“The theme of Science Week 2020 is ‘Our Diverse Planet’. The science fair is an opportunit­y to showcase the excellent scientific work being done at Aberystwyt­h University to broaden knowledge of science among schoolchil­dren and show them how important it is to all our lives.”

Festival attendees will be able to participat­e in a wide range of activities. The festival will feature interactiv­e stands form the university’s department­s of mathematic­s and physics, computer science, sport and exercise science, psychology, geography and Earth sciences, and biology and rural sciences.
