Principality clash set to go ahead

-

WALES’ clash with Scotland will go ahead as planned on Saturday, as things stand, despite the weekend’s other two Six Nations clashes being postponed.

France v Ireland was called off yesterday morning, and there were reports the entire final weekend would be postponed until October.

But, following meetings between the UK government and sporting bodies yesterday, tournament organisers have confirmed the match in Cardiff is on, as things stand.

Following that meeting, RFU Chief Executive Bill Sweeney said of the Wales v Scotland match: “I think it looks good, I don’t see any reason why that won’t proceed.

“There was no medical rationale for cancelling events or (playing them) behind closed doors yet, but clearly it is a moving situation so we’ll keep talking and go from there.”

High-level sources at the WRU have told the Western Mail the match will be played unless official advice changes.

That means that Wales Under-20s clash with Scotland in Colwyn Bay on Friday would also go ahead, but Wales Women’s match against Scotland in Cardiff is off.

Seven Scottish players and members of coaching staff are currently in self-isolation after one player was diagnosed and is currently being teated for the virus.

Meanwhile, European Professional Club Rugby confirmed that the Challenge Cup quarter-finals will proceed “as scheduled” on the first weekend of April, including Scarlets’ trip to Toulon and Dragons’ trip to Bristol Bears. ■ Last night, Italy’s Olympic Committee announced all sport in the country would be suspended until April 3.

This includes all football matches in Serie A, but does not cover Italian clubs or national teams participating in international competitions.
