New mayor ‘zooms’ into office
CARMARTHEN’S new mayor has zoomed into office – literally.
Councillor Gareth John’s mayor-making ceremony took place via webcam due to ongoing coronavirus lockdown restrictions making the usual event at the Guildhall impossible.
The office of town mayor dates from the 14th century – but it was a very much 21st-century affair as Carmarthen Town Council convened virtually thanks to the Zoom webcam service.
Instead of the wood-panelled splendour of the former crown court within the Guildhall, members contributed to the proceedings via their computer screens at home.
Cllr John made history by being the first mayor of Carmarthen to be installed over the internet.
In his acceptance speech, Cllr John referred to previous pandemics which had disrupted life in Carmarthen – but praised the community spirit being shown during a difficult time.
The town suffered many outbreaks of bubolic plague, smallpox, cholera, typhoid and others over the centuries.
“But Carmarthen has survived such misfortune,” said Cllr John. “It still remains the main town of the area and will once again adapt and thrive once this virus passes.
“My confidence for the future is based on the remarkable community sprit we’ve all witnessed during the current pandemic.
“Carmarthenshire Council’s response in support of every sector within society has been and remains truly outstanding – particularly in support of our heroic NHS, the elderly, vulnerable, disadvantaged and every aspect of life and business.”
