ATEENAGER brutally attacked his girlfriend and tried to strangle her after falsely accusing her of cheating on him.

Charlie Williams, 18, punched, kicked and bit ex-partner Chantelle Martin at their shared flat in Cardiff after he flew into a rage.

After inflicting bruising, swelling and cuts to his victim, the defendant told Ms Martin he “should have killed her instead”.

A hearing at Cardiff Crown Court yesterday heard from prosecutor Lowri Wynn-Morgan, who described the events of April 24 this year.

She said the couple had been together for eight months but Ms Martin said the relationship had gone downhill from January onwards when the defendant became violent.

On the date of the attack, Williams and Ms Martin had gone to Tremorfa Park separately with their respective friends. Ms Martin received a Facebook message from Williams asking her if she had been cheating on him.

She told him she wanted to end the relationship but he told her to return to their flat in South Morgan Place, Riverside, by 9pm or he would lock her out.

Ms Wynn-Morgan said the victim went back to the flat at 8pm in order to pack her belongings but when the defendant opened the door he appeared angry.

The prosecutor said: “He began screaming questions at her and and would not accept the answers she was giving. The defendant began to hit her and had what she described as an evil look in his eyes.

“She was trying to get up and begged him to stop but he continued punching and kicking her and bit her on the cheek and jaw.

“He picked up a piece of rope next to the television and pulled her up from the floor on to his lap and tried putting the rope around her arms and legs but it wasn’t long enough so he put it around her neck and tightened it. He threw further punches to either side of her head and she began crying. He then threw her on the floor, got on top of her and used her hair to bang her head on the floor.”

Williams told her: “I still don’t believe anything you said and beating you up wasn’t even worth it. I should have killed you instead”.

Ms Martin remained in the flat until April 26 when Williams left to visit his mother. She later left the flat and walked to Clifton Street to find someone with a phone because she did not own one.

She bumped into a friend and used her phone to call her father, who rang the police.

Williams was arrested and later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was sentenced to a total of 11 months detention at a young offenders’ institute.
