Laudrup in the frame to replace Pep at Brum

-

EX-SWANSEA City boss Michael Laudrup is among the contenders to become Birmingham City’s next manager, according to reports.

On Monday, the Blues confirmed current boss and former Swansea coach Pep Clotet would leave the club following the conclusion of the 2019/20 season.

It was confirmed the Spaniard would leave St Andrew’s to “explore other coaching opportunities”.

In a statement, Clotet said: “It’s been a really difficult decision to take because it’s a privilege to be part of the Blues family, but it’s the best step for everyone and it allows the club to continue to move forward with their vision and strategy.

“I’m very grateful to the club, its board and the supporters for placing their faith in me to lead the team this season and to face up to the challenges involved in what’s been a key transition under really demanding circumstances.

“We were set the objective of bringing stability to the club, promoting our academy and instilling a different playing style and, thanks to the togetherness that everyone has shown, we have been able to successfully move in that direction.

“It’s now time for us to focus on the remainder of the season and for the club to continue building on these foundations.”

And The Telegraph claim Laudrup is among the front runners to replace Clotet in the Midlands.

The Dane has been away from the dugout for two years since leaving his last job with Al Rayyan SC in Qatar.

Laudrup was at the helm during Swansea’s golden period in the Premier League.

He led the club to League Cup glory in his debut campaign at the club as well as taking Swansea to the knockout stages of the 2013/14 Europa League.

He was axed in February 2014 following a run of six defeats in eight matches, with Garry Monk taking his place.
