Independence vote for the Welsh only

-

THE latest YouGov poll figures for independence for Wales show a rise in support (Western Mail, June 6), however, this did not indicate whether this was carried out with just Welsh voters or for all eligible voters here in Wales.

Surely the future of our nation should be decided by the people of that nation – the Welsh, and not made open to all and sundry.

I am sure that as a Welshman I would not presume to have the vote on matters Scottish, Irish, French or Spanish if I were to live in those countries, as surely that privilege is for those people whose country it is.

Did Europeans living and working in the UK have a vote in the 2016 referendum even though it would have an enormous impact on them?

Given that here in Powys more than 54% of the population is now non-Welsh, then why should they be given a vote on an issue that is fundamentally a matter for Welsh people?

For example, it is highly unlikely that English residents here in Wales will vote for an independent Wales, so it obviously begs the question as to why they should be given the opportunity to decide on the future direction of a country that is not their own?

It is beyond my comprehension why a party such as Plaid has not questioned the veracity of such a poll and seems to be quite content to go along with the current process, which to me shows an unfair picture of the true figures here in Wales.

Let Welsh people only have the vote for independence and commission a poll under those parameters and then let us see the possible outcome of a vote by the Welsh for the Welsh.
