Artist’s poppy tribute to Dame Vera

-

A SOUTH Wales artist has paid tribute to “Forces’ Sweetheart” Dame Vera Lynn – by drawing her portrait with hundreds of poppies.

Artist Nathan Wyburn, 30, created the collage of a smiling Dame Vera after learning of her death aged 103.

Nathan, originally from Ebbw Vale but now based in Cardiff, created the mosaic portrait using hundreds of pictures of poppies.

Former Britain’s Got Talent contestant Nathan is known for his quirky artworks made from household items including Marmite, chocolate and glitter.

His famous subjects have included Prince Charles, Mariah Carey, Dame Shirley Bassey and The Jacksons.

He recently created a “thank you” piece to the NHS by using hundreds of photos of real healthcare workers to create one image, which featured on a striking South Wales Echo front page at the end of March.

The collage showed a nurse wearing a protective mask with the words “thank you” underneath.

Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in for Dame Vera, pictured below, after her family announced the sad news t w o days ago.

Announcing Dame Vera’s death on Thursday morning, her family said in a statement they were

“deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain’s bestloved entertainers at the age of 103”. Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Cliff Richard, veteran fundraiser Captain Sir Tom Moore and singer Katherine Jenkins have been among those who have paid tribute over the past 48 hours.

Sir Paul said: “Dame Vera Lynn was a strong and inspiring lady who has done so much for Britain.”

The Queen has also sent a private message of condolence to Dame Vera’s family, Buckingham Palace said.
