AMAN was stabbed to death in the early hours of the morning following a night out in Cardiff with his brother, a court heard yesterday.

Asim Khan, who was 21, was treated by paramedics in the city centre after suffering two stab wounds to his abdomen, but later died at the University Hospital of Wales.

Speaking at Newport Crown Court, prosecutor Caroline Rees QC said “serious violence” took place that night.

The court heard the incident happened on St Mary Street in the early hours of July 21 last year.

Momodoulamin Saine denies murdering Asim Khan, while Hamza Khan denies attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm with intent on Saine.

Ms Rees told the jury: “Asim Khan was the younger brother of the second defendant in the dock – Hamza Khan.”

She said Asim Khan, from Grangetown, was out with his older brother.

She played CCTV footage, which showed the brothers in the smoking area of Soda bar on Mill Lane with friends just before 11.30pm. The court heard “words were exchanged” after a drink was knocked over and the brothers were seen leaving the bar and making their way to McDonald’s.

Ms Rees said there was an initial confrontation after Saine tried to “antagonise” the pair and footage showed them chasing him.

Later that morning, Saine was seen walking from Westgate Street to St Mary Street at 4.45am and there was a second confrontation.

The court heard Saine was knocked down and prosecutors allege Hamza Khan attacked him while he was lying on the ground, with repeated kicks to the head.

A door supervisor from McDonald’s, who witnessed the incident, said Khan was “not holding back” and described punching, kicking and stamping.

Ms Rees said: “There is no dispute he [Saine] was in possession of a knife.”

Prosecutors allege Saine pulled out the knife and stabbed Asim Khan twice to the abdomen, inflicting the fatal wound.

Asim Khan was treated by paramedics at the scene, then taken to the University Hospital of Wales, where he was pronounced dead at 5.45am.

Saine, 28, from Bishopston Road in Ely, denies murdering Asim Khan.

Hamza Khan, 24, from Corporation Road in Grangetown, denies attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm on Saine with intent.

The case continues.
