POLICE SWOOP LINKED TO ‘CHOKING BABY’ IMAGE

- OWEN EVANS newsdesk@walesonline.co.uk

AN ARMED police operation on Anglesey yesterday is understood to be linked to a probe into an image of a baby “being strangled”.

Officers swooped on a property on Bron y Graig in Llangefni at around 10.30am.

Police turned out in force and warned members of the public to keep away.

A man was later led away in handcuffs after being arrested on suspicion of domestic related offences, with police confirming that the incident was brought to a safe conclusion.

It is now understood that the incident was sparked by a confrontation between a man and woman over an image published on social media appearing to show a baby “being strangled” by its mother.

A woman was arrested on suspicion of child cruelty and released on police bail pending further investigation, while the baby was safeguarded.

But yesterday, a confrontation linked to the initial incident took place at a cabin near the former Plas Penlan residential home in Llangefni, currently being used to house homeless people.

As the incident unfolded, people were urged to keep away from the scene.

A police spokesman said: “We are currently dealing with an ongoing incident in Llangefni.

“Please stay away from the immediate vicinity.

“There are no concerns for the wider community.”

An image taken from the incident showed around six police vehicles parked up, with more than a dozen officers involved in the operation.

Paramedics were also on standby at the scene.

Just before 12.30pm, police confirmed that they had brought the incident to a safe conclusion.

They said: “Further to our statement regarding an incident in Llangefni this morning, we can confirm that officers have arrested a local man on suspicion of domestic related offences.

“Although armed officers were in attendance, the incident was concluded peacefully and there are no further concerns for the general public.

“We would like to thank the local community for their assistance this morning.”

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to assist colleagues from North Wales Police with an on-going incident in the Bron y Felin area of Llangefni this morning, Tuesday 28 July at approximately 9.54am.

“We had one rapid response car and one emergency ambulance on scene.”
