Off-piste skier died after being caught in avalanche

A MAN who went off-piste during a skiing trip to France died after he got caught in an avalanche.

An inquest into the death of Stephen Williams heard how he and his friends and family were on a skiing holiday to Vallorcine in the Chamonix region on March 4, 2018, when the tragic incident took place.

yesterday was told how Mr Williams, who was born in Glanamman, caught a ski lift up to the top of the mountain intending to ski ‘off-piste’, meaning away from prepared ski runs.

He and the party he was with were experience­d skiers and had the necessary safety equipment with them in order to ski off-piste.

There was an avalanche warning of level three in place which meant there was a moderate risk of danger.

He and his friends were descending the section of the mountain, and were spaced out, but found themselves in a red area.

An avalanche took place and although Mr Williams was wearing an avalanche airbag backpack it owing to medieval monarchs exchanging the rare animals as gifts.

Clare Maclennan, divisional director of commemorat­ive coin at the Royal Mint, said: “This coin captures the story of the unique collection of rare beasts that belonged to generation­s of British monarchs at the Tower of London.”

Assistant coroner Aled Wyn Gruffydd recorded a conclusion of accidental death.
