Welsh rivals in Carabao derby

-

NEWPORT County will host Swansea City in the first round of the Carabao Cup after the draw threw up the derby clash.

Cardiff City will travel to face League One side Northampton, from whom they prised under23s boss Steve Morison earlier this year, but the tie that will grab the attention in this corner of the world is the one in which Mike Flynn’s League Two side welcome the Swans to Rodney Parade. It will take place on the weekend of September 5.

The last time the two Welsh clubs played against each other in a fully-fledged senior tie was in the FA Cup back in 2006 when Lee Trundle, Izzy Iriekpen and Leon Britton scored in a 3-1 win for the Swans.

You have to go all the way back to 1986 for the last time Newport beat Swansea, when the Gwent club came out 2-1 victors in a Division Four match.
