Dragons working on BLM response

THE Dragons will meet this week to decide how best to show their support for the fight against racism when rugby resumes.

In England, Gallagher Premiership teams demonstrated their backing for the Black Lives Matter movement in various ways last weekend.

Some players wore T-shirts, others took the knee and some stood in a heart shape before kick off as they honoured equality under the banner of Rugby Against Racism.

Exeter coach Rob Baxter felt there should have been a common approach across all teams via a directive from the league’s organisers.

It remains to be seen what approach the Welsh regions will take when they return to action in Guinness PRO14 derbies this weekend.

The Scarlets host Cardiff Blues on Saturday, while the Ospreys take on the Dragons at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.

Giving his thoughts on anti-racist stances, Dragons director of rugby Dean Ryan said: “I know the PRO14 and WRU are keen that there is a more consistent approach.

“We will consult with our players. We have players here that have passionate views and we are very keen that those views are heard and able to be appreciated by other people here.”

The Gwent region’s Wales and Lions hooker Richard Hibbard said the issue was likely to be discussed on Thursday.

“I think we will definitely have a chat about it this week,” he said.

“We want it to be something that really matters. It’s not just for one weekend. It is important, where any minority is affected.”

Dragons winger Ashton Hewitt has spoken passionately over the last few months about the fight for equality and the need to oppose all for forms of racism.

“Ashton has been very vocal and really articulate with it all,” said Hibbard.

“I think he has been superb, even when he’s been dealing with people coming at him.

“It’s important we show support in the right way and not just for one weekend.”

The Scarlets and Cardiff Blues have confirmed they are waiting for guidance from the PRO14 on the appropriate stance to take.
