Public Health Wales (PHW), which records all lab-confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths, has published its latest daily update.

The number of new cases reported by PHW today is 56.

It marks the largest daily jump so far this week after 40 cases were confirmed on Saturday, 34 on Friday, 35 on Thursday, 34 on Wednesday, 28 on Tuesday, and 19 on Monday.

These are the key details from Saturday’s release:

PHW said on Sunday the number of lab-confirmed positive cases of coronavirus in Wales had increased by 56 to bring the total in Wales since the pandemic began to 17,973.

Nine new cases were confirmed in Cardiff and eight in Caerphilly.

Newport and Powys had four cases, while Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend and Carmarthenshire all had three cases.

All other local authorities reported no new cases of the virus.

These are the areas with the highest seven-day rolling averages for new cases – one of the key benchmarks watched by Public Health Wales.

All figures are reported as cases adjusted for population (per 100,000 people):

■ Caerphilly: 11.0

■ Merthyr Tydfil: 9.9

■ Ceredigion: 8.3

(All other areas have below the Wales average of 6.0 cases per 100,000 people)

So-called “true” death figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which include deaths in all places and also when Covid-19 is suspected rather than confirmed, found that 2,551 had died with the virus in Wales registered up to August

14.

Despite testing capacity standing at more than 15,000 each day in Wales, 6,521 tests took place on Saturday, August 29.
