Mystery surrounds discovery of human bones
MYSTERY remains around the discovery of human bones in bin bags dumped in a Suffolk river.
A post-mortem examination of the remains has not shed any light on identification or a cause of death in relation to the find in the River Stour, between Meadow Gates and Croft Bridge in Sudbury.
A murder investigation was launched due to the “suspicious circumstances” in which the bones were found on Thursday and police are still searching the river and its banks.
In an update yesterday, police said that following the Home Office postmortem examination further tests are needed and that it “will be a lengthy process”.
Temporary Detective Superintendent Mike Brown, of Suffolk Police, said: “This initial examination has unfortunately not been able to move us any further forward at this stage.
“The remains will now be subject to further specialist forensic tests which we hope will provide us with more information. This process will take time, so it may be a little while until we are able to provide any further significant updates.”
He said the bones will be treated “with the utmost respect and dignity as the tests are completed”, because “this was a person – somebody’s child, parent, partner or sibling”.
He urged anyone with information to contact police, including anyone who believes they may know who dumped the remains, or anyone who saw someone carrying two black bin bags towards the river over the past week.
He said police do not believe there is any wider threat to anyone or cause for concern but that extra patrols are taking place to provide reassurance.
