FAMILY ‘TORN APART’ BY DEATH CRASH

- DAVID POWELL Reporter newsdesk@walesonline.co.uk

THE parents of a 24-year-old killed in a crash caused by her boyfriend have told how they have been “torn apart” by her death.

Fflur Alaw Green died when driver Sion Francis Davies lost control of the vehicle she was a passenger in on a bend.

The 23-year-old pleaded guilty last month to causing her death by driving without due care and attention.

He had tried to “downplay” his responsibility for the collision, blaming the poor weather, road surface and tyres.

But yesterday at Caernarfon Crown Court he was sentenced to eight months in prison.

The court heard victim impact statements from 24-year-old Fflur’s parents.

Her mother, Judith Vaughan Jones, said her life had been “torn apart” by her daughter’s death and she now struggles to sleep.

She added: “She was my firstborn

– so perfect and utterly beautiful in every way.

“The day she died a part of me died too.”

The court was told that Fflur was “artistic” and had intended to use her gift to set up a business and help underprivileged children.

Her father, Christopher Green, said: “Fflur will always be in my mind and heart.”

The hearing was told that on July 11 last year Davies had been driving a Renault Scenic on the A487 at Gellylidan near Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd, when he failed to negotiate a bend and collided with a Mitsubishi ASX car at around 9.40pm.

Davies, of Rhiwbryfdir, Blaenau Ffestiniog, who had only had the car for about a month, had been driving within the 60mph speed limit, but still too fast for the wet weather conditions, an investigation found.

He lost control and ended up “two-thirds to three-quarters” in the opposite lane of the oncoming traffic on a stretch known as Oakley Drive, said prosecutor Sarah Badrawy.

Fflur, of Trawsfynydd, Gwynedd, had been wearing a seatbelt but Davies, who suffered minor injuries, had not.

Vet Dr Sarah Heard, who had been driving the Mitsubishi, was not seriously hurt.

Davies was said to be “devastated” by the effects of the crash.

His defence barrister, Jonathan Austin, said his client has had counselling.

But in addition to the jail sentence Judge Timothy Petts disqualified Davies from driving for three years and four months and he must take an extended retest.
