Spurs have option to keep Bale for longer

-

Tottenham will have the option to keep Gareth Bale for longer than one season, according to reports.

Bale’s private jet touched down in London at lunchtime yesterday ahead of the Welshman penning a seasonlong loan switch from Real Madrid.

He will return to north London seven years after he left the club for the Spanish capital, with Spurs also set to sign his Real team-mate Sergio Reguilon in a permanent deal.

However, football.london report that Bale’s deal will include a clause which will allow Spurs to trigger a second season option, should this campaign prove successful.

Should that option be taken up by Spurs, it would see him remain in north London until the end of his Real Madrid contract, which is due to expire in the summer of 2022.

The transfer has been quite a coup for Jose Mourinho and the club’s chairman Daniel Levy, who has repeatedly tried to bring the Wales ace back to Tottenham in recent seasons.

However, one big stumbling block in any potential deal was the 31-year-old’s exorbitant wages, believed to be worth around £600,000 per week before tax.

However, football.london claim that Spurs will pay only 40 percent of that, equating to around £250,000 per week.

Mourinho has been keen to sign Bale in the past and has admitted as much in recent days, but will now finally get the chance to work with him this season.

We expect the Wales ace to be announced within the next 24 hours once the final nuances of the deal and the unveiling are thrashed out at Spurs’ HQ this afternoon.

Meanwhile, former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon claims constant comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo were at the heart of Gareth Bale’s downfall at the Bernabeu.

Bale is on the brink of completing a season-long loan move to Spurs after a difficult couple of years with the Spanish champions, with the player at the heart of a public fall out with Real boss Zinedine Zidane, while also enduring a turbulent relationship with the club’s fans and local media.

The winger was effectively exiled from the first team as a result, and Calderon admits that the move to Spurs was the best solution, before admitting that the club will likely be the main beneficiaries from the deal

“For the player it was the only solution,” he told Sky Sports. “I think it’s the best one.

“He wasn’t playing here. The fact is the coach didn’t count on him.

“I’m sure that Tottenham is going to have a good player again. He hasn’t forgotten how to play.

“He came here as the MVP of the Premier league.

“Mourinho is keen on the player.

“He likes playing counterattacking football and he can be a perfect player for that tactic.”
