English majority quashes Home Rule
I WISH Mark Drakeford and others in his party well in demanding more powers for Wales.
However, this nod to the past – Home Rule for Wales – which was once the promise of the first Labour Party, the IPL, and then taken up by the then Liberal Party when it seemed that the modern Labour Party had rejected it.
I am old enough to remember the Liberal Party published a pamphlet calling to federalise Britain.
In reply, Mr Gwynfor Evans the leader of Plaid Cymru, published a pamphlet called “The Confederation of Britain”.
His main point was that any devolution granted by a Westminster Parliament is in reality power retained.
An English-majority Parliament can vote to repeal any previous law passed by any previous administration.
He also pointed out that when a nation becomes independent, the first thing that they do is open discussions to reach agreements of benefit to all the neighbouring states, without an answer imposed by a huge English-majority parliament on a weaker nation which can never match that majority within the Union.
I am afraid that no Welsh Labour, Welsh Conservative, or Welsh Liberal Democrat party can ever get the best deal for Wales as long as the elephant in the room is the present perpetual huge English MPs’ majority in all the unionist parties.
They can smother and delay any demand from their Welsh MP’s.
The choice for Wales is whether you relegate Wales to be last in the queue for ever, or make Wales an equal partner in a confederation of equal respect.
