AQUAMAN can confirm his adaptability with victory in the Deepbridge Estate Planning Service Handicap at Chester.

Roger Varian’s Kodiac colt demonstrated on his final start last season that he can handle easy conditions when he moved well on soft ground at Yarmouth before having to settle for an honourable runner-up spot.

He improved significantly on that form when a wellbacked winning favourite at Catterick last month.

That success came on a much quicker surface, and Aquaman’s pedigree suggests he may well be most at home in those conditions.

He has nonetheless shown already that he can acquit himself well too when there is rain around - as there is at the Roodee this week - and as the forecast improves for day two of the Boodles May Festival, he should not be inconvenienced.

A 300,000 guinea yearling, Aquaman was unplaced but ran with credit in very useful novice company on his first two career starts - including here - late last summer.

But his Yarmouth performance and winning Catterick return put him on an upward curve, and an initial rating of 87 gives him a chance to double up against his contemporaries on handicap debut.

Trueshan used to inhabit similar company but is a proven Group performer these days, and can successfully concede 2lb and upwards in the tote+ Pays You More At tote.co.uk Ormonde Stakes.

Alan King’s gelding will need to be 5lb better than likely favourite Japan but has been a remarkable and sustained improver over the past two seasons.

Trueshan posted a new personal best when signing off as part of a famous day for his jockey Hollie Doyle with a hugely impressive victory in the Group Two British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot in October.

He drops back in trip here and as a Gold Cup hopeful at Ascot next month, this return is likely to be a staging post en route back to marathon tests - but even at this sharp track, with soft ground in his favour, Trueshan can outstay Japan and outclass the remainder.

Earlswood is another who appears sure to handle conditions, and may be capable of causing a minor surprise in the tote+ Biggest Dividends At tote.co.uk Dee Stakes.

Several of his rivals may not be seen at their best if the ground is still riding soft, but he will have no trouble on the basis of a convincing maiden victory at Navan in March.

AUSTRALIAN allrounder Michael Neser is all set to make his Glamorgan debut against Lancashire today.

The 31-year-old arrived in Wales last week at the same time as fellow overseas star Marnus Labuschagne but was unable to play in the victory over Kent as he sought a return to full fitness following the long flight over from Australia.

Neser joins a long list of recent Queensland players who have represented Glamorgan and is looking forward to finally playing county cricket.

“I’ve been wanting to play county cricket for years and delighted to finally get my chance.

“There’s a bit of a Queensland play here with Glamorgan and, from all the reports, this is a lovely club and so far it hasn’t disappointed.

He has been a consistent performer with Queensland in the Sheffield Shield over recent years and in the latest edition took 18 wickets at 24.33, which included a five-wicket haul in the final.

Although conditions will be different from Australia, bowling in consistent areas will still form the basis of his game in the UK.

“County cricket is a different game from Sheffield Shield. Lines and length are probably have to alter a bit to suit these conditions.

“Hopefully, what I bring will be consistency. That’s what I’ve relied on over the last few years. I’ve transformed my game, almost like Peter Siddle and turned myself into a line and length bowler and that’s my role. I’m not going to be a player I’m not.

Neser will play alongside Labuschagne as the club’s two overseas players, with Neser hoping he can hit the same heights as his teammate in 2019.

“Marnus transformed his game after the county stint with Glamorgan. I still think he can take his game even further.

“He’s just continually learning and works well with Matt Maynard so hopefully I can do the same.”

Meanwhile, English batsman Charlie Hemphrey is not returning to the county after failing to overturn his classification as an overseas player.

The 31-year-old was unlikely to be picked and has agreed the termination of his contract by mutual consent.

His time playing for Queensland stopped him counting as a home player until 2022.

Director of cricket, Mark Wallace, said: “The incentives for fielding home-qualified cricketers are now greater than ever and as a result we were open and honest with Charlie in telling him that it would have to be a consideration in selection moving forward.

“Charlie was a very popular member of the squad and has been a hugely positive influence at the club since joining. Everyone at Glamorgan wishes him and his family well for the future.”

Hemphrey said: “I’d like to thank Glamorgan for giving me the opportunity to play county cricket.

“I loved playing for the club, living in Wales and I couldn’t have asked for better teammates.”
