UNFORTUNATELY for both Mr Drakeford and the parents who immediately opened the prosecco, the unions did not seem to be on the same page. Within hours Laura Doel, the director at NAHT Cymru, the union for head teachers, commented furiously that the announcement was ‘confusing and unhelpful’, that there had been a lack of consultation with schools and that there wasn’t enough evidence about how the virus was transferred in relation to schools.

“We need to know about infection rates between the young, and transmission rates between the young and adults. Only when these questions have been answered can we begin to understand the conditions necessary to support a safe return,” she said. “We have been clear in our discussions with the Welsh Government that the profession must be at the heart of any plans and not merely part of a consultation once plans have already been drawn up.”

8. The Virus Can’t Get You As Long As You Stay Alert

May 4 to May 10 Wales’ confirmed Covid-19 cases – 10,524 Wales deaths – 997 UK confirmed cases – 172,664

UK deaths – 28,734

AS Wales approached the wretched figure of 1,000 confirmed coronavirus deaths it is worth considering what the number of deaths actually means. The number used at the start of each chapter comes from the Public Health Wales data published every day and only includes deaths that occur after a positive test. Anyone who died in a care home or their own home but hadn’t been tested for the virus was not included in this figure.

Another figure that was often quoted by politicians, analysts and the media is the death figures from the Office for National Statistics which was consistently considerably higher than the figure given by PHW.
