I’LL NEVER STOP TRYING TO IMPROVE, SAYS SHEEDY

CALLUM Sheedy has revealed how he is never satisfied with the way he plays and is driven on by the constant quest for the perfect game.

The fly-half produced yet another man-of -the-match display for Bristol in Monday’s 39-7 Premiership victory over Louis ReesZammit’s Gloucester.

His outstanding club form comes on the back of his compelling cameos for Wales during their Six Nations title-winning campaign.

But there is no chance of the 25-year-old Cardiffian resting on his laurels, as he confirmed on the Scrum V podcast.

“All I ever do when I watch myself back is think ‘oh that’s rubbish’ or ‘I could have done that better’,” he said.

“I guess that’s just maybe me as a person. “When I watch Semi [Radradra], who is unbelievable, I don’t see myself anywhere near that level.

“I can’t even believe I’m in the same team as him or that he even knows my name, to be honest!

“It’s really weird. When I watch myself, all I do is critique myself and I actually get frustrated when I don’t play the perfect game and the perfect game never comes, so I’m just constantly frustrated I guess.

“I see my whole game needs improving, my passing game, my running game, my kicking game.

“I will never be satisfied with it.

“It’s hard for me to sort of pinpoint one thing I need to work on because in my eyes it all needs a bit of work and that’s the way I look at my game.”

Sheedy has also been reflecting on his first season with Wales, which brought him nine caps, and how he has settled into the camp.

“I find we are all pretty similar blokes,” he said.

“We all absolutely rip into each other, but then we love each other at the same time.

“For me, it’s like going back home. I felt everyone was just like me.

“We were all just having a laugh and it was brilliant.

“I knew Kieran Hardy very well from when we were in Jersey together, so he would be one of my close mates in there.

“But the likes of Gareth Davies, Liam Williams, boys who have been round the block and really experienced, who I was kind of probably a bit sheepish with at first, they have ended up being some of my closest mates in camp.

“So, you definitely do grow that bond by being in camp and spending even more time together, due to Covid.

“I have made some really good friends there and I keep in contact with them all.”

Sheedy caught up with one of his Wales pals on Monday night, with winger ReesZammit lining up in the opposition ranks for Gloucester.

“It was good to see Zammo and give him a big hug after the game,” he said.

“I feel really proud of him being in the Lions.

“He was probably the best winger in the Six Nations and deserves his shot.

“I have no doubt he will go there fully wanting that starting spot because that’s the type of bloke he is.

“It’s scary to think he has just turned 20 and has got all this in front of him. It makes me feel old being 25!”

The game against Gloucester proved to be a pretty remarkable one, with Bristol having no fewer than eight tries ruled out, while it was a landmark occasion, as 3,000 fans were allowed inside Ashton Gate.

“It was mad,” Sheedy said.

“The game itself was pretty bonkers in terms of the amount of disallowed tries and what not.

“Just to hear that noise from the supporters, even though it was only 3,000, it felt crazy because we weren’t used to it.

“The noise was absolutely bonkers. It was hard to even hear yourself think at times.

“It was amazing to have fans back and hopefully we can push on now and have even more crowds before the end of the season.”

Table-topping Bristol have three league matches left, to be followed by the play-offs, and then international rugby will take centre stage this summer.

With Dan Biggar away with the Lions, Sheedy will be the favourite for the Wales No. 10 jersey in the July Tests against Canada and Argentina.

“For me, just being selected in the squad would be unbelievable,” he said.

“I’ve seen Jarrod Evans has been playing brilliant.

“He’s an excellent player and someone I get on with really well.

“But I honestly haven’t thought about the summer Tests because I know the only way I am going to get picked is by playing well here at Bristol and that’s the most important thing right now.”
