Abrahams departs as women’s head coach

-

WALES Women head coach Warren Abrahams has left his position at the Welsh Rugby Union with immediate effect.

The South African was appointed in November 2020 on a fulltime basis but he will now leave by mutual agreement less than nine months after being appointed.

Abrahams, who was in charge of the 7s side as well as the 15-a-side team is leaving to pursue other ventures - with a statement from the WRU confirming he departs with the full blessing of CEO Steve Phillips.

“We would like to thank Warren for all that he has done for the Wales Women national squad in these very difficult times and we wish him well in his future endeavours,” said Phillips.

“The international Women’s game is an integral and growing area for the WRU; we will now move to find Warren’s replacement to ensure the necessary stability for the squad ahead of the World Cup in 2022.”

Abrahams said: “I am grateful to the WRU for this opportunity and I would like to thank the Women’s management team and the players.

“I have enjoyed working in the Women’s programme and I wish those involved well for the future.”

This is the second departure around the women’s side, with former international Rachel Taylor having resigned as skills coach on the eve of the Six Nations this March - having only been appointed in January.

Previous coach Rowland Phillips also departed in mysterious circumstances last year after disappearing off the radar ahead of the 2019 autumn matches.
