JD WELSH CUP REVIEW

-

CARMARTHEN Town are through to the last 16 of the JD Welsh Cup after dispatching Premier League side Newtown after a penalty shootout at Latham Park.

Having taken the lead with a second-minute goal from Dion Phillips, the visitors were finally pegged back by a 66th-minute penalty from Aaron Williams.

That sent the game to penalties and Carmarthen were spot-on with all five of theirs to go through 5-3. Liam Thomas started things off for the visitors and Tom Dyson made it five out of five to clinch victory after two misses from Newtown.

Saltney Town also needed a shootout to ensure one tier-three club go through to the next round.

The Ardal North West club looked to be heading out when they trailed 1-0 against Penrhyncoch with the game entering its final minute.

A terrific volley from Ryan Gittins in the 21st minute had given Penrhyncoch the lead against the run of play. But as the tension mounted, an incident between Saltney’s Scott Beach and Penrhyncoch’s Niall Coleridge saw them both sent off.

Up stepped Ryan McCleary to equalise with a superb free-kick that sent the game into a shootout.

Jake Gibbons scored the first for the home side. That set the tone and Adrian Callaghan and Steve Chiocchi made it 3-2. Shaun Tinsley then saw his effort saved and the visitors drew level at 3-3.

McCleary made no mistake, which meant Penrhyncoch had to score. But skipper Owain James fired his effort against the bar and Saltney were through.

Buckley Town ended Monmouth Town’s ambitions with a 2-0 home win, while Guilsfield beat Dinas Powys 4-2.

Despite the heroics of goalkeeper Dan Field, and a goal from Luke Morgan, Penrhiwceiber’s bold bid to reach the last 16 fell short as they were beaten 3-1 by Flint Town United.

The JD Cymru Premier side found Field in brilliant form as he denied them for much of the first half, before Alex Jones headed home from a corner in added time before the break.

Seven minutes into the second half a glancing header by Morgan levelled things up.

But Mark Cadwallader and Jack Kenny came up with the goals that saw Flint through.

Cardiff Met beat Barry Town United 3-0. Emlyn Jones opened the scoring in the 33rd minute and Adam Roscrow doubled the advantage two minutes into the second half.

A second strike from Roscrow in the last minute made it even more comfortable.

Meanwhile, a Matthew Jones hat-trick helped Aberystwyth Town to a 4-1 victory over Cefn Druids. Owain Jones opened the scoring in the 18th minute before Jones fired in two – one a penalty – before the interval.

Ben Wynne grabbed one back, but Jones completed his hat-trick from the spot.

Cup holders The New Saints just did enough to squeeze past Conwy Borough thanks to a firsthalf goal by Dean Ebbe.

Connah’s Quay Nomads made light work of their trip to Trefelin BGC as they won 4-0. Two goals from Jamie Insall added to strikes by Arnaldo Fernandes and Declan Poole.

Taffs Well pulled off a shock at home against JD Cymru South leaders Llantwit Major as they beat them 2-1. Jamie Owen opened the scoring from the spot in the 13th minute and Marcus Jones doubled the lead. Cullen Kinsella gave the visitors some hope when he converted a 65thminute penalty.

Colwyn Bay won 5-1 at home against Ruthin Town. Cai Owen broke the deadlock just before the break. Mitchell Bryant bagged a brace before Danny Edwards made it 4-0. Jamie Cumming scored for Ruthin a minute from time, but the home side had the last laugh through Jack Higgins.

Ryan Williams, Mike Hayes and Gruff Williams netted as Caernarfon Town beat Prestatyn Town 3-0.

Cymru Premier outfit Penybont survived a tough first half at Cambrian & Clydach Vale before winning 3-1. Nathan Wood scored two, with Sam Snaith adding another. The hosts grabbed a consolation from Jordan Smith.

Bala Town beat Pontypridd Town 5-0, while Cam Langan scored the only goal in Swansea University’s 1-0 home win over Bangor City.

Alhagi Touray Sisay scored an 88th-minute winner for Haverfordwest County in their 2-1 win over Airbus UK Broughton.
